The Blame Game

Who, me??

When you’re diagnosed with cancer, you look for reasons why. Me, I get it — my weight, my family history…I don’t have far to look. In the last couple of months I’ve started talking to women who are just starting their chemo experiences — and to a one, they all look for reasons to blame themselves.

“What did I do that caused this?”

When I spoke to my doctors about that this week, they shrugged it off. For the most part, you have these cells already inside you that turn on sometimes. That’s it. You can live a preventative lifestyle, eat an anti-inflammation diet and exercise every day, but there’s no guarantee that cancer won’t find you anyway.

I think as women we do this a lot more than with our health — I used to do it with my career and other choices I’ve made. STRESS IS A MAJOR ACTIVATOR of cancer.

So let’s agree that it’s not our fault. Let’s treat ourselves like we treat our best friends, eat well, exercise, meditate and take on everything that comes our way with love, smarts and peace.
